Feeding time

Remember to look into your baby's eyes and talk to him or her while feeding them because this is a great time for bonding!

Breastfeeding:

Things you may need:

  • Breast pump
  • Nursing bra's
  • Nursing pads
  • Boppy or a different nursing pillow

Breast feeding is always suggested by pediatricians unless otherwise discussed. The reason is breast milk has many advantages over formula for your baby. Colostrum, the yellowish fluid your breast first produces, helps protect baby from diseases. Breast milk also contains antibodies and is easier for baby to digest than formula. With just the right amount of vitamins and minerals it's perfect for baby.

If you decide to breast feed it is best to start as soon as the nurse brings your baby. It's also a good idea to only give your baby the breast for the first couple of weeks. Your baby should be feed on demand which will be about every 2-4hrs.

Positions for breast feeding:

Cradle: Hold your baby with his or her head cradled in your mid arm.

Criss Cross: Hold your baby with the arm opposite the breast he or she is feeding with. Support your baby's head with the palm of your hand.

Side: Lye on your side and bring baby to your breast. ( In the photo I am propped on my arm which you can do as well).

Football: Support your baby's head with the palm of your hand. His or her feet should be positioned toward your back.

  • #1 tip is to be patient and do not give up. It can take a while to perfect the art of breast feeding.
  • Bring baby's head to your breast.
  • Your nipple should point to the roof of baby's mouth.
  • Most of your areola should be in baby's mouth.
  • To break sucking, put your finger to the corner of baby's mouth.
  • Let your nipples air dry after feeding.
  • Switch breast each feeding.
